Subject: Latest breaking news on the attempt to hijack the Davis election
Hi Davisites,
There have been a number of new developments.
1. Don Saylor is definitely the subject of a dirty trick or a very
stupid developer. Probably both. Automated calls began Monday
afternoon urging voters to support "school board trustee Don Saylor"
and identified that call as being "paid for by 5G Consulting." None
of the calls over the weekend for Forbes or Harrington announced who
was paying for the calls. Why for Don on Monday? I think the answer
is 5G is persona non grata in town now, and by being associated with
Don, it will harm him. They certainly don't want Don elected at this
point. 5G and its officers have made Don an enemy for life.
2. I was told by someone who knows him that Steve Guidero misspelled
his name in the filing. Try to Google on Guidero and nothing comes
up. Try Steve Gidaro and you will find stories about his involvement
with development efforts in Sacramento. How come one would allow
ones name to be misspelled? Ah. Think of future google searches for
Gidaro. Nothing about the Davis controversy will ever come up. I
hope the Enterprise will fix this by replacing the spelling of his
name in their web archives so that he will forever be found in as
poor of light that he is being shown in Davis. Or better yet, does
anyone want to set up a website with all of this sordid information
about Steve Gidaro (aka Steve Guidero) and make sure it is properly
metatagged to be the top return when anyone ever searches for his
name in the future? I'd help. It would only be fair, and that is
what he says he wants to achieve by involving himself in Davis
elections - "a fair and open process."
3. I have been corrected. Bette Racki, our city clerk gives all
candidates a detailed manual of the rules their treasurers need to
follow for campaign finance reporting. It is clear that all
donations above $25 need to be reported with the person's name,
occupation and employer so that money can't be hidden from public
knowledge. Stan Forbes put his signature on all his campaign filing
stating. He has been through many city council races. The rules
haven't changed. So he either puts his signature on important forms
that he has to sign without looking at them, or he looked at them and
forgot the city rules, or he looked at them and ignored the clear
reporting violations. Whatever the reason, this failure to follow
city rules prevented the public from knowing about the two $99
donations from the Petrovichs (developers of projects around Davis)
until the end of the campaign. (Note: For state and other local
campaigns, only $100 and above contribution's require this
information. So when you see a $99 contribution in a Davis election,
someone probably thought they were going to evade being found out.)
4. The only two serious candidates taking no developer money are Sue
Greenwald and Lamar Heystek.
5. Helen Thomson and I called off our phone call alert scheduled for
this evening. The Enterprise did an excellent job of bringing people
up to speed on what was happening with the Gidaro's efforts to
influence the election. You all didn't need another call.
6. The County Clerk predicts voter turnout in town will only be 55%.
This means that whoever gets their supporters to get out of their
comfortable chairs after coming home from work and vote will likely
be the winners in tomorrow's election. Many people do need urging to
vote when elections are confusing, divisive or mostly decided (as is
the case with the presidential primaries). So please, encourage
your friends and neighbors to vote tomorrow. Many won't vote without
prompting. And this is the best way with the time remaining to
balance Mr. Gidaro's effort to get a high voter turnout for Forbes
and Harrington. Remember, the polls close at 8 pm. If you need
help finding your polling place use
http://www.yoloelections.org/voting/polling_place or call 666-8133.
7. We need a non-partisan organization to help convince candidates
and independent expenditure campaigns to take Davis' election laws
seriously. If you are interested in participating in such a group,
please let me know.
Don't forget to watch DCTV on election night. It should have some
very entertaining conversations about the elections.
